Are lobotomies still performed like in Sucker Punch?

okay so honestly i had never even heard of a lobotomy until I watched this movie. so i thought i'd google and see just what it is that they are trying to do to this girl in the movie.. they took like this metal thing and put it where her eye was and jammed it into her skull... at least thats what i think they did.. i read on google that it is a procedure meant to cure mental illness or depression or something.. and im pretty sure that sucker punch is set in the 1960s so if it is still done today i figure it'd be done in a different way, because this is just done right scaryyy...i can't believe it'd even be legal anymore, which i dont know if it is.. i'm just saying IF it is..
